1500 Kapiolani

behind ala moana center

The buzz is already starting for 1500 Kapiolani and construction hasn’t even started.

Located at the site of the old Heald College, the new mix-use building will offer residential units, street-level retail, a four-star hotel, restaurants and more right on Kapiolani Boulevard.

The building will consist of a two-tower scheme. The towers will be situated in a mauka-makai orientation, taking advantage of Hawaii’s mild climate and pleasant breezes.

The 40-story building will feature 500 residential condominiums with eight units total per floor. Layouts offered will be 122 one-bedroom units, 71 two-bedroom units, 6 three-bedroom condominiums, and 301 studio units. The architect for the building is [au] Workshop Architects. They are an award-winning architecture and urban design firm based in Colorado. They have worked on several projects throughout Hawaii.

The building is being developed by Salem Partners. Salem Partners, based in Los Angeles, is no stranger to the area. The company has been working with the city’s newly adopted Interim Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) ordinance to help transform the area. In addition to the redevelopment at this site, Salem has another nearby project, the Mana’olana Place on 1695 Kapiolani Boulevard.

Building Amenities

The full amenities list for 1500 Kapiolani has not been released. What is known is the spectacular high rise is set to have a restaurant, night club, luxury spa, full concierge and a 34th floor sky garden with an infinity pool, children’s pool, kids play area, and much more.

Residents will have access to a hot tub, bar, outdoor kitchen, and private elevators. Extensive open/green space is a central focus and allows the amenity areas to feel larger and keep a smaller building footprint. There will be a lush sky garden platform at 350-feet in the air for residents, providing spectacular ocean and city views. The goal of the building is to maximize usable common and private open space.

Easy Access to Shopping and Entertainment

One of the benefits of living here will be its convenient location. If the amenities in the building aren’t enough, then the Ala Moana neighborhood convenient location is another factor to weigh. The location makes commuting, shopping, and entertainment easy.

The building is placed amidst the bustling, transit-oriented community of Ala Moana where everything needed for a full and active lifestyle is available with just a quick walk or bike ride.

Adjacent to the building is the largest Walgreens in Hawaii. The store occupies 36,058 square feet and is one of the highest sales prices for a store in Walgreens’ history at a price tag of $42.25 million.

If you need to run out for groceries, there are stores like Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target, Foodland Farms, Don Quijote, Longs, and Palama Market right down the street.

You can pick up your daily coffee or smoothies at the neighborhood Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Jamba Juice, or Mr. Tea Cafe. Plus, many restaurants are nearby for dinner or lunch including MW Restaurant, Yamaji, Sushi ii, Nobu Honolulu and Piggy Smalls.

Just across the street from the new building is the world’s largest open-air mall, the Ala Moana Shopping Center. The Shopping Center has high-end retailers including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Bloomingdale’s, Cartier, Burberry, Gucci, and more. Stop by and check out the latest trends at J. Crew, Kate Spade, Anthropology, or Lacoste. The shopping center also provides lots of opportunities for entertainment hosting more than 800 performances a year including a daily Hula show.

Residents can take a quick bike ride or walk to go to Ala Moana Beach Park that is getting a complete makeover. Renovations include replacing all sections of the beach, restoring bathrooms, widening and smoothing pathways, adding a bike path, replanting grass and trees, installing two new sand volleyball courts, and building a new playground. Beach sections will be replenished this year and improvements will continue through 2025.

Quick Commute

Commuting is made easy for residents of the building because of the new Honolulu Area Rapid Transit (HART) Ala Moana station that will be a short walk away. If you work downtown, then you can catch the bus which stops frequently along the street and reach your office within 15 minutes.
